HCC History

Faith Community Lutheran Church
in Las Vegas, NV began sponsoring 9 orphans in Wenzon, Liberia in 2009.
In May of 2014, nine more orphans were rescued from vulnerable situations, especially as an orphan.

In July 2014, flooding forced the orphans and care-giving family out of their home. The entire household of 21 people became homeless until we rented a suitable home.

Then months later, Ebola became a major influence not only in health but also in every aspect of life: economy, educational, social, mental and emotional Borders and schools closed, trade and handshakes cease and cost of living soared. Once again, the lives of Liberians were extremely challenged. Liberia dropped to the rank of the 3rd poorest nation in the world. We bless God once again for His protection of the Hope family, staff and friends.

The Hope family moved into the newly constructed orphanage home on August 4, 2016. We bless God for His provision and the opportunity to be His witness in the Joezohn community through a Lutheran school, church and orphanage home..
The school opened in 2016 to 100 students, expanded to 6th grade with 250 students in 2017, 9th grade with 320 in 2018 and to 11th grade with 470 students in 2019. Covid closed the schools throughout Liberia for 9 months until a reopening on December 1st.

Due to Liberia's chronic food instability for 3/4 of its population, children will often be forced to dropout of school due to a lack of finances. In order to break the cycle of poverty, HCC turned to agriculture as a means to fuel a tuition assistance fund that awards the most vulnerable students with tuition assistance. We currently own 467 acres in Bong County with 2 separate farms where a variety of crops grown and animals bred.

A church plant in Gbarnga in 2018 through the African Radio Ministries led to 12 acres being purchased and a new Lutheran School opening at HCC #2 which by God's grace will be the future home to the ELCLS University and Seminary.

2020, despite the Covid, was a year to open the Nancy Fayia Medical Clinic on the Joehzon campus. It currently employs 12 people and serves the community through lab tests, urgent care, OB/GYN and a pharmacy. This project was seeded through the LC-MS PSD School Ministries - Hearts for Jesus project.
